Recently I watched a TV program about healthy lifestyle on a local TV station. One of the topics was about dragon fruit and its benefits. Yeah, right, that white or red fruit with unique scales. Both of the dragon fruit species contain of high fiber, but it is said that the red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) has more benefits to human body because it is rich in calcium and iron.
Other names of dragon fruit are strawberry pear, cactus fruit, pitaya / pitahaya or sweet pitayas. This fragrant fruit is actually the fruit of certain cactus species. Dragon fruit’s flower blooms only at night and when the dawn comes, the flower withers. Just like other cactus species, this fruit also attempts to preserve water. This makes dragon fruit contains of high level of water as well as vitamin C. The host of the healthy life style program also said that dragon fruit is good to lower cholesterol level.
